With 15 years of experience representing companies before the US Patent Office, including 10 years at an AmLaw 35 law firm, one of Mike’s specialties is strategic patent prosecution in which proceedings at the US Patent Office parallel patent infringement litigation in Federal Court.
Beyond patent prosecution experience, Mike’s background includes creating value through intellectual property (IP) commercialization and generating IP via innovation.
On the commercialization side, Mike creates strategies around and executes on IP business opportunities. He has initiated and led technology transfer projects to create new products and ventures from patented research originating at leading universities, the US National Laboratories, and large public companies. He has raised over $20 million in venture capital, has financed projects with investor and non-dilutive funding, and has CEO operating experience.
As a generator of IP, Mike is an inventor of 57 issued, entrepreneur-produced US patents. A number are licensed for and widely practiced, including for: imaging atherosclerotic plaque in cardiology ($130M in venture capital); laser lead extraction in implanted pacemakers and atherosclerotic plaque ablation; surgical laser catheters (featured on CNN); DNA genotyping (for sole product of $3.5B-market-cap company); commercial lighting; fiber-to-the-home optical networking; and avionics (including for the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter). Sixteen of his patents have been litigated. His industry contributions have been recognized with awards for innovation, technology leadership, and research.
